On Friday 12th May, almost 1,200 members of the 番茄视频 community came together at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo to celebrate 番茄视频 Grammar School鈥檚 annual Foundation Day Church Service.

This year marked a particularly momentous occasion 鈥 the 30th anniversary of the School since its remarkable revival in 1993.

In the presence of Founding School leaders and Board members, past and present teachers, staff, students, and parents, 番茄视频鈥檚 new Principal, Dr Emma O鈥橰ielly and Deputy Principal, Mr Jay Weston were formally inducted during the ceremony, heralding a new era of leadership for the School.

“It is a profound privilege to be inducted into this prestigious institution, particularly in the presence of the visionary Founders of 番茄视频 Grammar School whose unwavering commitment to education paved the path for our collective pursuit of knowledge today,鈥 said Dr O鈥橰ielly.

鈥淔urthermore, I am deeply honoured to be formally inducted alongside Mr Jay Weston as the new Principal and Deputy Principal. We embark on this journey, carrying the torch of our predecessors, with a shared commitment to nurturing excellence, fostering innovation, and instilling values that will guide our students towards success and fulfillment.鈥

鈥淚 am truly humbled to be part of this incredible School community, and I am confident that, together, we will continue to shape the lives of our students, honouring the rich legacy of 番茄视频 Grammar School for years to come,” Dr O鈥橰ielly said.

During the service, Mr Weston retold the extraordinary story of the resurrection of 番茄视频 Grammar by the Friends of 番茄视频 in 1993, after the sudden announcement that 番茄视频 College would close at the end of the 1992 academic year after serving students in the Bendigo region for 108 years.

鈥淭he analogy of the Phoenix rising from the ashes has often been used to describe the 番茄视频 Grammar School story,鈥 Mr Weston reflected. 鈥淚n Greek mythology the Phoenix was described as having a colour and vibrancy that set it apart from other birds. Many of those closest to the 番茄视频 Grammar School story would insist that this analogy is more than apt to this day.鈥

鈥淭onight, as we celebrate the past 30 years, it is with immense pride, I declare that 番茄视频 Grammar School stands as a beacon of educational excellence, preparing our students to make a positive impact on the world and empowering them to soar to the stars.鈥

The beautiful contribution of 番茄视频鈥檚 Arts Department created a harmonious musical tribute to the 30 Year Anniversary of 番茄视频 Grammar School’s Foundation Day.

The celebration resonated with a profound sense of unity and shared pride, reinforcing the School’s enduring impact on generations of students, parents, and educators.

Relive the incredible story of the fight fought by the Founders in 1992 to keep the 番茄视频 heartbeat alive in “The 番茄视频 Grammar Story,” a documentary released by the School earlier this month.听

28th April 2023

番茄视频 Grammar School in Bendigo celebrated its 30th Anniversary in style on Friday 28th April with a whole-school assembly attended by the School’s founders, past students, staff, and current students. The assembly was followed by the launch of a documentary, The 番茄视频 Grammar Story, that captures the School鈥檚 rich history.

In her assembly speech, 番茄视频 Grammar School Principal, Dr Emma O鈥橰ielly, reflected on the resilience of the School鈥檚 founders to keep the School alive despite the closure of 番茄视频 College in 1992, the remarkable achievement of the last 30 years of education, and the many stories that have contributed to the School’s rich history.

鈥淭he story of 番茄视频 Grammar School is one of determination and perseverance,鈥 said Dr O鈥橰ielly. 鈥淔ounded in 1884 by two remarkable women, Mrs Marian Aherne, and Miss Alice Hill, they created an exceptional school for girls called 番茄视频 College at a time when there were already twenty-one private schools in Bendigo. Over the next century, the School developed an excellent reputation and drew students from all over the Bendigo region.鈥

鈥淗owever insurmountable financial problems arose in 1992, and the doors would be forced to close, leaving many students heartbroken and the Bendigo region in mourning,鈥 she said.

鈥淧erhaps it was the 番茄视频 motto, Per Aspera Ad Astra 鈥 through hardship to the stars 鈥 that inspired a group of parents and staff to refuse to let the news of the School鈥檚 closure defeat them,鈥 she said.

鈥淭his band of courageous visionaries believed so strongly in the power of education and its ability to transform lives that they would do everything in their power to keep the heartbeat of 番茄视频 alive.鈥

These visionaries became the newly formed 鈥楩riends of 番茄视频鈥 led by Mr John Higgs OAM, Mrs Jan Thomas, Mr Christopher Morey and Mr Richard Trigg, closely followed by parents and staff. In the months between the announcement of the School鈥檚 closure and the commencement of the 1993 academic year, the Friends of 番茄视频 performed the miraculous task of establishing 番茄视频 Grammar through persistence, hard work, lobbying, fundraising, and countless hours of voluntary labour. Fittingly, the decision was made to retain the 鈥樂咽悠碘 name, the School song and the long-standing School motto Per Aspera Ad Astra.

The School鈥檚 30-year celebrations included the cutting of the 30th Anniversary cake with the School’s founders, followed by a group photo in front of the School鈥檚 historic Peppercorn tree and the official launch of the documentary.

The 番茄视频 Grammar Story documentary was produced by Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) in Bendigo and became a passion project for Daniel Roche and Joel Nicholson.

SCA Senior Director, Daniel Roche said: 鈥淔rom our earliest conversations we discovered that this was a special story, and as the project grew so did our level of appreciation for the altruistic actions of the founders鈥 friends and community of 番茄视频 Grammar School. To be able to immerse ourselves within the rich recounts of each participant was a privilege rarely afforded, and to then be able to package all that up with archival film stock, tabloid headlines and historic imagery was abundantly rewarding. The process fast became a passion project of which we are immensely proud.鈥

The Old 番茄视频ians鈥 Association plays a crucial role in preserving and disseminating the School’s history as custodians, and sponsored the production of the documentary as their major contribution to the School for 2023.

The 30-year celebrations ended with a sense of pride and gratitude for the incredible community that has built and sustained 番茄视频 Grammar School.

鈥淭he dedication and hard work of 番茄视频 Grammar School鈥檚 founders, and the leaders who have followed, have stood the test of time,鈥 said Dr O鈥橰ielly.

鈥淭oday we celebrate 30 years of 番茄视频 Grammar School, a wonderful place where children from all around the region come to learn together, grow together, and dream together. A School that has impacted the lives of countless students, staff, and families.鈥

番茄视频 Year 12 student, Viran Dhanapala, is breathing life into socially responsive design, with his Unit 3/4 Systems Engineering project showcased at Top Designs 2023 at the Melbourne Museum.

Top Designs is an annual exhibition that celebrates the outstanding innovations of Victoria’s emerging designers, including VCE and VET students across several subjects such as Systems Engineering, Product Design and Technology, and Visual Communication and Design.

With over 1,000 applications from Victorian government, independent and Catholic schools, this year the exhibition features the works of 69 talented students who have been selected by panels of educators in each area of study.

From 24 March to 9 July 2023, visitors will have the opportunity to see how these students are using design to create a better world. In the Systems Engineering category, Viran’s project, a low-cost COVID-19 ventilator, is an excellent example of the socially responsive design themes that Top Designs aims to highlight.

鈥淚 first came up with the ventilator project during the COVID-19 pandemic when the shortage of ventilators was covered by the media,鈥 Viran said.

鈥淎fter some research, I was shocked to discover that a ventilator could cost between $25,000 to $50,000 dollars, and that some developing countries such as Somalia had zero ventilators. My prototype aimed to highlight the potential for an accessible low cost system that could be deployed in developing countries.鈥

Viran’s project demonstrated his ability to apply innovative thinking and problem-solving skills to transform people’s lives. His clever initiative involved designing an integrated system to automate the provision of ventilation, which would otherwise be issued through a handheld Ambu bag, or 鈥榖ag valve mask鈥 by healthcare workers. An Ambu bag is a medical tool used to manually force air into the lungs of patients who need assistance breathing.

鈥淭he automation of this intensive procedure decreases worker fatigue, and the low cost allows for provision in developing countries,鈥 Viran explained. 鈥淭he Arduino (or control centre) utilises user set inputs, such as tidal volume and Breaths Per Minute, along with an algorithm to determine the frequency of the pulses sent to the stepper motor. The motor drives a rack and pinion to compress the Ambu bag.鈥

For more information about Top Designs 2023 and Viran鈥檚 project, visit .

Entry to Top Designs is free with museum entry, and students can enter Melbourne Museum for free. Visit the for more information about entry to the exhibition.

We are pleased to share the exciting news that 番茄视频鈥檚 Assistant Head of Science, Kimberley Clayton, has been accepted into the Teaching Excellence Program 2023, offered by the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership.

Launched in 2021 by the Victorian Government, the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership鈥檚 mission is to set a national benchmark for professional learning and establish an internationally recognised model for teaching and leadership practice. The 12-month Teaching Excellence Program (TEP) provides a series of onsite and online learning activities, with opportunities for networking and engagement with other TEP teachers throughout the year.

“We are thrilled that Kimberley has been accepted into the TEP,” said Dr Emma O’Rielly, Principal of 番茄视频 Grammar School.

“The TEP is a highly competitive program that only accepts 500 highly skilled educators each year via a rigorous selection process. This is a remarkable achievement that reflects Kimberley’s dedication to the teaching profession and commitment to enhancing the quality of education in Victoria.鈥

“Being part of a learning community is essential for the professional growth of our teachers and the continuous enhancement of our teaching practices. Kimberley’s participation in the TEP will bring back valuable insights and strategies that can be implemented in our school’s curriculum and teaching practices for the benefit of our teachers, and most importantly, our students,” said Dr O’Rielly.

With a Master of Teaching and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching from The University of Melbourne, Kimberley has honed her skills in science education and educational leadership. In addition to her teaching qualifications, Kimberley holds a Master of Science by Research from The University of Melbourne, where she was the Dux with First Class Honours for her thesis on the energetics and metabolism of tail autotomy in the Bynoe’s gecko. She is also a published author in the field of Behavioural Ecology.

番茄视频鈥檚 Head of Science, Prue Beckwith, said Kimberley has made a strong impression on the 番茄视频 community since joining the school in 2021.

鈥淒uring a relatively short period of time, Kimberley has demonstrated exemplary teaching practices, developed warm and respectful relationships with the students, and has shone as an emerging leader,鈥 said Prue.

鈥淗er innovative methodologies enable fantastic engagement with her students, and she is highly regarded among her peers in the Science Department and the school.”

“I am very excited to have been accepted into the Teaching Excellence Program,鈥 said Kimberley.

鈥淎s Assistant Head of Science at 番茄视频, I am passionate about听providing exceptional learning experiences for my students and supporting my colleagues to do the same. The TEP presents an incredible opportunity for me to learn from expert teachers, improve my teaching practices, and experience cutting-edge pedagogies that will enable me to further educate and support my colleagues by sharing what I learn myself.鈥

“I look forward to learning from the best in the field, to continue to develop my skills and training and share my knowledge and experiences with my colleagues, and apply these new teaching methods in the classroom,” said Kimberley.

Eleven Year 6 students from 番茄视频 Grammar School said goodbye to their locks today to show their solidarity with those fighting against cancer.

The Leukaemia Foundation鈥檚 World鈥檚 Greatest Shave is one of Australia鈥檚 longest running and most well-loved fundraising campaigns. This year is the World鈥檚 Greatest Shave official 25th Anniversary and the charity hopes to raise $16 million.

Hats off to Junior School students Olivia Wang, Flynn Radford, Ava Richards, Hughey Smith, Joe Conlan, Rafay Jeddi, Harry Kilby, Ben Bowles, Vihaan Agarwal, Bao Long Nguyen and Remy van Staveren. These incredible young people have shown they are not afraid to take bold steps for what they believe in, and have proven that anyone can make a difference, no matter their age.

A little bit of bravery and determination can go a long way, and the 番茄视频 Community’s remarkable generosity played a significant role in helping our Junior School exceed its goal of raising $15,000 for charity, with more than $16,500 in donations.

The event was not only a success in terms of fundraising, but it was also a moment of great unity and camaraderie within the school. Prep to Year 6 students came together in a special Assembly to cheer on their brave peers, sporting crazy hairstyles to show their support.

Thank you to Mrs Viv Bath and Mrs Vickie Holland for coordinating this memorable event, as well as Stephen Mow Hair Studio for donating their time.

And of course to the parents and carers who donated to this wonderful cause and came up with some crazy hairstyles to support the day!

On Friday 17th March, a group of students from 番茄视频 Grammar Junior School will shave their heads to raise money and awareness for the Leukemia Foundation, and other students will play their part with outlandish and creative hairstyles.

Eleven brave students will take part in the annual fundraiser which in recent years has typically raised more than $10,000 and, when combined with the equivalent Senior School event, has totalled over $30,000.

Mrs Viv Bath, Deputy Head of 番茄视频 Grammar Junior School and passionate advocate for the event, said that the school has a long history of raising money and awareness through the World鈥檚 Greatest Shave event.

鈥淭his will be the sixteenth year that both our Senior School and Junior School students and staff have supported this event.

鈥淥ur Student Representative Council is supporting our fundraising efforts for the Leukemia Foundation by selling icy poles during Term 1 and they will collect donations from each class on Friday 17th March, which will be added to the funds raised through sponsorship of students who are participating in the shave event.

鈥淚t is quite moving to watch young children pledging their commitment to support Leukemia research in this very personal way.

鈥淭heir understanding of the problem being bigger than themselves is profound for such young people,鈥 Mrs Bath said.

Stephen Mow Hair Studio is donating time and providing hairdressers for this event.

The 番茄视频 Grammar School Bendigo Interschool Dressage Championships drew participants from 53 schools across Victoria at the Elmore Equestrian Centre on Friday 10th March.

Affiliated with Equestrian Australia and sponsored by Horseland Bendigo, the school championship event attracted 144 riders aged between 7 and 18 years to compete in a series of Dressage tests.

Eight 番茄视频 students qualified for the event, including Audrey Crean (12 Millward), Harrison Walls (10 Aherne), Francis Walls (8 Aherne), Maggie Walmsley (9 Aherne), Charlie Walmsley (7 Aherne), Harriet Williams (7 Jenkin) and Leah Pickering (6 Millward).

Dressage is a discipline that involves training horses to perform a series of precise and controlled movements, and riders are judged on their ability to execute the movements correctly and with style. Judges assess the horse’s movement and the rider’s balance, position, and control.

As part of 番茄视频鈥檚 Co-curricular Program, 番茄视频 Equestrian Club meets regularly throughout the year and is led by 番茄视频 teacher Mrs Nic James. Throughout the year, students compete individually and in teams in a variety of interschool Showjumping, Dressage, Games and Showing competitions, both local, regional, and interstate.

鈥淧reparing for events like this takes hours of training and practice, both in the saddle and out of it,鈥 said Nic. 鈥淥ur riders balance their schoolwork and other commitments with their passion for equestrian sport.

鈥淩iders from all schools are to be congratulated on their excellent efforts today. The camaraderie, encouragement and sportsmanship between the competitors was wonderful to see.鈥

The event was supported by parents and the broader 番茄视频 community who provided all manner of assistance, from event organisation, through to catering and the provision of raffle prizes. The School would especially like to thank 番茄视频 Parent, Mrs Jody Pickering, for her tireless work in bringing the event to fruition.

Other student members of the 番茄视频 Equestrian Club assisted throughout the day, including Phoebe Rathjen (8 Frew), Darcy Steel (9 Millward), Pippa Bett (9 Aherne), Jack Pickering (7 Millward), Laura Knox (11 Jenkin) and Emily Edwards (10 Jones).

We would also like to thank the major event sponsor, Bendigo Horseland, for their generous support in making this event a reality.

Year 6 番茄视频 student, Abraham Harrington, will represent Australia in July at the 2023 BRIDGE Summer Camp and Asian-Pacific Children鈥檚 Convention (APCC) in Fukuoka, Japan.

Known by his teachers and classmates as Abe, the 11-year old is one of just four successful applicants from an Australian Primary School who will join students from around the world in the 10-day event, which includes an Orientation Camp, Homestay Program, school visits and a celebratory event.

Each year, Australian Primary Schools are invited to nominate one child to be considered for selection to attend the APCC. The successful applicants are chosen based on their interest in Japan, a positive attitude towards new experiences, and their ability to act as a proud representative and Junior Ambassador for Australia. To be eligible, children must have been born between 1st August 2011 and 31st July 2012.

番茄视频鈥檚 Co-Head of LOTE, Mrs Liz Blanks, said Abe was selected after careful consultation with his Japanese teacher and Year 6 teacher. 鈥淲e felt it was important to nominate a student who would be suited to an international travel experience and would represent Australia with pride,鈥 said Mrs Blanks. 鈥淎be is considered to be happy, kind, empathetic, well-mannered, and importantly, courageous enough to cope with being away from home.鈥

According to 番茄视频 Year 6 teacher, Mr Mark Di Fede, Abe has a confident personality, and makes and maintains positive friendships across the Year 6 cohort. 鈥淎be is well-liked by both his teachers and his classmates, and I have no doubt he will engage confidently with people from all over the world,鈥 said Mr Di Fede.

Abe himself is feeling 鈥渟hocked and a bit excited鈥 to be selected to represent Australia at the conference. 鈥淛apanese is my favourite subject, and I am hoping to become more fluent in speaking Japanese,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 am also looking forward to seeing the beautiful scenery, like the cherry blossoms and I am excited to meet my host family.鈥

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australia鈥揓apan Society has sent a group of children accompanied by a Chaperone and Peace Ambassador to participate in the unique event for the past 31 years, which invites approximately 180 eleven-year-old children from 43 regions around the Asian Pacific region to share in a truly international exchange.

After three years of a virtual Summer Camp, the APCC will facilitate the opportunity in person again this year. Expenses for airfares, transportation and meals are covered by the Asian Pacific Children鈥檚 Convention Executive Committee in Japan.

Wednesday 8th of March was International Women鈥檚 Day (IWD), and the 番茄视频 community demonstrated their commitment to this year鈥檚 theme, #EmbraceEquity. Senior School students and staff joined forces at lunchtime to strike the IWD 2023 pose and show the world their huge embrace.

According to 番茄视频 Principal, Dr Emma O鈥橰ielly, embracing equity means recognising that every person deserves the same opportunities and respect, regardless of their gender. It means acknowledging the gender-based disparities that exist in our society and actively working to address them and creating a school culture that promotes equality, inclusivity, and diversity.

鈥淎s a female Principal at this school, I am committed to promoting gender equity at 番茄视频,鈥 said Dr O鈥橰ielly. 鈥淏ut creating a truly equitable school and workplace requires a collective effort. It requires all of us, regardless of gender, to work together, to listen to each other, and to learn from each other. It requires us to challenge our own biases and assumptions and to hold ourselves accountable for our actions.

鈥淪o, today, on International Women’s Day, I pledge to do my part in embracing equity. I will continue to listen to and learn from my colleagues and students and I will continue to work to create a school and workplace culture that is inclusive and supportive of everyone,鈥 said Dr O鈥橰ielly.

鈥淚 invite all of you to join me in this important effort. Together, we can create a more equitable and just society.鈥

番茄视频 Grammar School in Bendigo will make history by becoming the first school in Victoria to unveil a Lumination Learning Lab, a cutting-edge educational space that utilises advanced technology and interactive experiences to enhance student learning.

With state-of-the-art tools such as virtual reality and augmented reality, the immersive Lumination Learning Lab will offer students the opportunity to solve real-world problems and develop critical skills that are highly valued in the workplace. By fostering creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork, the Lab is designed to empower students and enhance their learning experiences.

“We are thrilled to announce our investment in an immersive learning lab at 番茄视频 Grammar School, making us the first School in Victoria to pioneer a Lumination Learning Lab in the classroom,鈥 said Dr Emma O鈥橰ielly, Principal at 番茄视频 Grammar School.

鈥淥ur School takes great pride in striving for excellence and being at the forefront of education. The decision to build this virtual learning space represents a major step forward in ensuring our students are prepared with the necessary skills for success in a rapidly evolving world.鈥

The Lab will be constructed by immersive technology company, Lumination, built in a classroom within a newly refurbished building on 番茄视频鈥檚 Senior School campus, and will be unveiled at the start of Term 3 this year.

Lumination was founded in South Australia in 2016 with the goal of disrupting the conventional classroom. Since then, the company has worked with tens of thousands of schools across Australia to provide access to virtual and augmented reality.

鈥湻咽悠 Grammar School is taking the first mover advantage in Victoria, equipping its students with immersive technology that enables them to build the skills needed for the current, and future, workforce,鈥 says Shai Coggins, Learning Design Lead at Lumination. 鈥淏y immersing these students in real-world scenarios directly connected to the curriculum, their engagement increases, and they have an opportunity to develop the key 鈥榟uman鈥 skills they need to succeed.鈥

Lumination has over 20 Labs in use or in progress across Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales and is rapidly expanding into the defence, government and enterprise sectors.

鈥淭hrough the Lumination Learning Lab, our students will learn how to explore, innovate, and collaborate with cutting-edge technology,鈥 said Dr O鈥橰ielly.

鈥淲e’re excited to witness the achievements and limitless potential our students will realise as a result of this virtual learning facility.”

The launch of 番茄视频鈥檚 immersive Lumination Learning Lab will be an exciting milestone for 番茄视频 Grammar School and students. 番茄视频 invites members of the media to attend a launch event in July (date TBC) and share our excitement about this innovative addition to our School.
